Bibliographic Databases
Discover relevant papers and books
Bibliographic databases are used to identify references to published literature, journal articles, conference proceedings, book materials, reports, patents, etc.
MPDL has subscribed to a selection of discipline specific bibliographic databases to provide MPG researchers and librarians with access to high-quality references information. Access to these databases is granted via a number of retrieval interfaces, including the Web of Knowledge, ProQuest, SCOPUS and EBSCOHost.
Follow the link to the list of currently subscribed bibliographic databases.
CENDARI - Collaborative EuropeaN Digital ARchive Infrastructure
A pipeline for historical research
CENDARI will provide and facilitate access to existing archives and resources in Europe for the study of medieval and modern European history through the development of an "enquiry environment". This environment will increase access to records of historic importance across the European research area, creating a powerful new platform for accessing and investigating historical data in a transnational fashion overcoming the national and institutional data silos that now exist. CENDARI will enable the formation of new research questions, through tools for aggregation, interrogation and visualization of historical sources, source descriptions and other data.
The MPDL experiences in conceptualization and development of research infrastructures and tools as well as its strong involvement in DARIAH Project will be beneficial for the CENDARI developments.
The CENDARI Project outcomes and results, especially in the area of the data integration and semantic services as well as knowledge organization framework will further strengthen the MPDL orientation towards development of tools that support the e-workbench scenarios, especially in the area of automated data acquisition, entity recognition, data mashups and metadata enrichment.

Citation Databases
What's your Impact?
Essential Science Indicators - Based on Web of Science data, Essential Science Indicators is a compilation of essential science performance statistics and science trends. The chief indicators of output, or productivity, are journal article publication counts. For influence and impact measures, Essential Science Indicators employs both total citation counts and cites per paper scores.
Journal Citation Reports - Compiler of Impact Factor information. JCR delivers quantifiable statistical information based on citation data from Web of Science in order to evaluate scientific journals.
Web of Science Core Collection (WoS) - Multidisciplinary Citation Index comprising the leading journal and proceedings literature from 1900 until present. A feature of the WoS is that from any bibliographic record in the database links are available to its cited references, to related articles and to citing articles.
SCOPUS - A large abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature. It features smart tools to track, analyze and visualize research. Scopus delivers a comprehensive overview of the world's research output in the fields of science, technology, medicine, social sciences and arts & humanities.

Databases for Facts
Reliable information complementary to the Internet
MPDL provides to all Max Planck researchers a portfolio of more than a dozen databases with reliable sources and references supplying information compiled by experts. Find for example chemical information like substances, reactions, and structures with SciFinder or look up business facts and figures in the WISO database.
Digital Libraries Connected (DLC)
Managing, Editing and Publishing digital collections
Beyond serving as a portal, DLC offers web-based tools to support the publishing and editing of digitized copies on the internet. Scans, metadata, transcriptions and structure interpretations in TEI format can be easily uploaded and published. If no TEI is available, the integrated online editor allows the straightforward creation of simple content structures, thereby making it possible to find and navigate the digitized works. All copies in DLC can be referenced using persistent URLs. They can also be exported in standard formats. Integrated image tools enable detailed viewing of the ancient works. The integration of full texts allows searching also older scanned works which have been enriched with adding full texts. As all collections are stored in the same infrastructure, it is possible to search across different collections and institutions.
DLC is maintained and operated by MPDL.

Edmond is provided as a central service by the Max Planck Digital Library. It is based on the Open Source Software imeji.
ESAC
Efficiency and Standards for Article Charges
ESAC (Efficiency and Standards for Article Charges) is an initiative pursuing the development of agreed service standards around Gold Open Access charges. This includes:
• help shaping the principles and conditions of the APC (article processing charges) based business model
• gain more evidence on institutional APC workflows and their respective challenges involved
• partner with publishers in order to work on the improvement of processes such as submission and author identification, invoicing and reporting
• start the discussion on efficient workflows involving all parties such as funders, libraries, authors, standardization initiatives, and publishers
• become a reference point and network in order to communicate good practices, proven workflows and guidelines on this subject
As of November 2015, ESAC moved into the DFG funded project INTACT, an open access infrastructure project that brings together three already existing initiatives which will now collaborate under one roof. Besides ESAC, this is the Open APC platform at Bielefeld University Library and the working group Open Access Analytics at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies of Science (I2SoS) at Bielefeld University. INTACT aims at an improvement of the infrastructure which is needed to ensure a transparent and efficient APC market.
EZB-Journal Catalog
Locate your journal across libraries
The Electronic Journals Library (EZB) offers information on print and electronic journals held by more than 600 libraries. Supported by collective data management across all EZB member libraries the EZB data is of highest quality and constantly up-to-date. It serves member libraries as an administration tool for eJournal licenses and provides researchers and librarians with a simple and clear information on access rights.
EZB was founded in 1997 by the libraries of University of Regensburg and TU München with the support of German Research Foundation (DFG), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and by the Bavarian State Ministry of Sciences, Research and the Arts. It is operated at University of Regensburg. MPDL is an EZB member library and continuously manages the holding entries for the MPG licenses.
FACES
Get a view of anger, fear and happiness
The image collection is freely available for scientific purposes and was re-used in various contexts worldwide. It solves the challenge of data privacy by distinguishing an open part of the collection and other parts, which are made available to researchers on a case by case basis.
The FACES application is maintained and operated by MPDL. It was the beginning of a series of novel software developments at MPDL with imeji and Edmond being the latest services.
imeji - Planning, installation and support service
Set-up your own research data management repository
The Max Planck Digital Library develops and operates imeji for following services:
• Open Access Data Repository: Edmond
• Research data enrichment, structuring and sharing: Gluons
• Administrative Data dissemination: Outbox
With our technical expertise, we guide any Max Planck institute interested in using imeji for its own purpose. Especially, we advise you on the best way to use imeji for your specific scenario and we support you installing imeji for a sustainable and excellent service for your excellent research.
Information Needs Assessments
Report your needs to shape your information resources
Librarians use the MPG-BEER (Bestands- und Bedarfsermittlung) web interface to submit general needs (Wunschliste) as well as semiquantitative ratings for selected resources. A database backbone- also part of the MPG-BEER toolkit- facilitates overview, analysis and reporting by MPDL staff and ensures long-term availability of well structured evidence for licensing decisions. The complete toolkit was developed and is operated by the MPDL.
iThenticate
Prevent plagiarism in your work
iThenticate compares your uploaded documents to published research articles from global scientific, technical and medical publishers and web content. Highlighted text will include text that has been properly quoted and cited so it is not necessarily plagiarized. You will need to verify that every highlighted section has been properly quoted, summarized or paraphrased.
Note: iThenticate is a hosted third party service. As you need to upload your documents to the company's servers, it is not suited for documents containing sensitive information.
