  • 17th Berlin Open Access Conference: From Transformation to Collective Responsibility

    February 5-6, 2025 | Harnack House Berlin

On 5–6 February 2025, the OA2020 Initiative, coordinated by the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) on behalf of the Max Planck Society, will host the 17th Berlin Open Access Conference (B17), Moving OA Forward: From Transformation to Collective Responsibility at Harnack House, Berlin.

Continuing the Society’s leadership in making research openly accessible for the benefit of science and society, B17 will bring together negotiators and institutional leaders from over 40 countries to chart the next phase of the global open access transition in science communication. Thanks to MPDL’s leadership, over 90% of research from its institutes is now published openly, demonstrating open access negotiations as a viable open access pathway for the global community. Yet, while transformative open access agreements negotiated by institutions around the world have unlocked millions of research articles, many challenges remain. In particular, ensuring that all authors, regardless of their financial background, can publish based solely on the quality of their work—without encountering financial barriers—is a critical task. In an era where AI technologies are rapidly reshaping science communication, preserving author rights and ensuring publishing integrity also remains a core challenge.

Co-chaired by Prof. Dr. Ulrich Pöschl (Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Mainz) and Prof. Dr. Gerard Meijer (Fritz Haber Institute, Berlin), B17 will provide a platform for negotiators to align around shared principles and priorities, defining concrete actions that will drive the open access movement forward and strengthening foundations for a truly open science ecosystem.

Stay tuned for the conference outcomes, shared globally with the research community.

We are celebrating 25 years of Scientific information Provision (“Literatur-Grundversorgung”) on October 24th, 2024.
For a quarter of a century, we have supported the scientific community with indispensable resources.

Today, the Scientific Information Provision manages more than 200 licences and provides access to

    • more than 17,000 peer-reviewed journals and

The Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) and the LMU Open Science Center are organizing a hybrid 5-day Open Science Summer School to allow early career researchers of any scientific discipline to gain more trust in the research that they do, and make it as credible, reproducible, and transparent as it can be in the eyes of their peers, the public, and funding agencies. The Summer School will consist of public lectures and hands-on workshops for selected applicants. The in-person part of the school will take place at the MPDL. The online part will be on Zoom.

  • Open Science Days 2024

    January 29-30, 2024 I Harnack House Berlin

    OpenScienceDays24.png

The Max Planck Digital Library cordially invites you to participate in the Open Science Days 2024.

Following the move to purely virtual realms in 2021, this time we will return, at least in part, to the familiar and also proven form of face-to-face meetings:

The conference will be held as a hybrid meeting, with the attendance part again taking place at the Harnack House in Berlin. It is going to extend over one and a half days (January 29/30), with the whole day being Monday.

Similar to what we did at the last conference, we will not focus on one specific aspect of Open Science, but instead look at recent developments across the broad spectrum.

The conference language will be English.
Participants will have the opportunity to present their own ideas, experiences, initiatives or activities and to discuss current topics related to Open Science.

The participation fee is 100€ for on-site attendance and 40€ for digital attendance.

Program and registration information will be announced in time on the Open Science Days Website.
